Condition Ratings

Excellent - (Expert Setup)

This used item only has minor cosmetic defects. It may have minor wear such as light dings, scratches, finish cracks, or pick marks from regular use.

Very Good  - (Expert Setup)

This used item may have some scratches, pick wear, missing finish, or buckle rash, but nothing that affects playability or functionality.

Good  - (Expert Setup)

This used item is in fine working order but has significant cosmetic imperfections such as dents, cracks, or areas of corrosion. While the signs of use are evident, it plays well.

Fair - (As-Is)

Fair condition items are used and have various imperfections that impact the function of the item. They aren’t broken but have minor functional issues and minor to severe cosmetic imperfections. Ideal for budget-conscious players or those willing to give it a little extra care.

Project - (As-Is)

Project items are used and have clear functional problems that will generally require repair. They may come with multiple cosmetic imperfections and hold potential for restoration—perfect for those who enjoy bringing instruments back to life or taking on a rewarding challenge.

Non-Functioning - (As-Is)

Non-Functioning condition items include used instruments and other gear that simply do not work, such as a guitar with an entirely broken neck or headstock. These items will need significant repair before they can be played. Suitable for skilled luthiers or as a source of parts.

 Condition Notes and Exceptions:

We also often will give you the condition rating and then qualify it by stating "except . . ." The exceptions may sound as if the rating should be in a lower category. Technically that may be correct, but we find that if, for example, we rate a beautifully clean guitar as "Good Condition" because it has a 1" repaired side crack that is hard to see, it gives the incorrect impression of the guitar. So, we will probably rate it as "Excellent Condition" with a Condition note that says "except small repaired crack in the side". What we are saying is that cosmetically this is a really nice guitar but we want you to know that it is not absolutely perfect.

Although we endeavor to mention any cosmetic or other flaws that we are aware of, it is not always possible to do so for every instrument. We think our ratings are fair, but if you are concerned about any specific issues then we urge you to call us at (517) 372-7880 for a hands-on description. You can also contact us via email with specific questions at web@elderly.com

AS-IS

Instruments sold AS-IS have not gone through our repair shop for set up and do not have the Elderly warranty applied to them. Our instrument describers do a thorough job when describing these instruments, but they are not luthiers. Not every single flaw or non-original part may be documented, but all major concerns will be addressed. While most problems are obvious, some only become apparent as work progresses. For best results, we recommend working with a professional luthier.

Shop Adjustments

With the exception of AS-IS Instruments, all our new and used stringed instruments come with our expert setup for easy playability before we put them up for sale. Our personal rule of thumb for setting the action (string height above fretboard) has been developed over many years. We are confident that nearly all players will be pleased with our average setup. However, some players may want the action adjusted in a way that is outside these parameters. We are happy to provide this service, but in some instances there may be an additional charge (particularly if you want higher action than our standard).
