GIBSON SUPER L-5 (1935)
23 Photos
VG-EC, now believed to be the 3rd lowest recorded serial number of a Super 400 (entered into Gibsons ledgers April 1935), this is the earliest that is known at this time, the label says "Deluxe" at the top and "L-5" for the model, truss rod cover is engraved "Super L-5", very fine example of the Super 400, with sunburst finish body and neck, 18" lower bout, ~24-7/8" scale length, 1-3/4" nut width, 6-ply w-b-bound X-braced carved spruce top with w-b-w-bound f-holes, 5-ply w-b-bound mottled plastic pickguard, adjustable ebony bridge (no inlays in the base, but seems original), engraved tailpiece with 3 cutouts (original - later production models were engraved "Super 400"), w-b-w-bound curly maple back, b-w purflings on maple sides, curly maple neck (with black centerstripe), heavily engraved riveted Grover open back tuners with butterbean buttons, w-b-w-bound ebony fretboard with split pearl block inlays, 5-ply w-b-bound headstock with pearl script "Gibson" logo and large 5-piece pearl inlay in center, deco-shaped black truss rod cover with white border and white strip diagonally through center engraved "Super L-5", one minor repaired crack in top near bass f-hole, appears to be all original. This is an extraordinary instrument for both its excellent tone and it being among the earliest known examples of the Super 400 (and the special appointments and the latest research lead us to believe this was one of the very first of this model ever made), also was featured on the great-instruments-showcase "Tone Poems II", by Martin Taylor and David Grisman on track 6 "Anything Goes", on consignment, with '50's Gibson HSC (brown with pink lining and says "CLARENCE PETRIE on the outside), price reduced (SN:91809)
