The Merle Travis guitar picking style is known as thumb picking due to the dominant base line carried throughout the tune by the thumb. Merle used one finger to add the lead notes. Mullins adds the second finger; selecting lead harmony notes or ragtime licks. You need only have a moderate working knowledge of chords.
