Elderly Instruments Repair Shop

Kjell Croce

His name is pronounced "Shell". Kjell was born in Norway, and grew up in California. He became interested in repairing and building instruments after being impressed by luthiers in Southern California who had worked on his guitars.

Kjell attended Red Wing Technical College in Minnesota and graduated from their Guitar Building and Repair program in 1993. After graduation, he went to work at Woodsound Studio in Maine, working for Ron Pinkham. While there Kjell began to hone his skills in all aspects of repair and restoration of acoustic fretted instruments. In addition to repair and restoration, he built the Woodsound Studio line of streel string and classical guitars with Ron Pinkham.

In 1998, he left Woodsound Studio to go to work for himself, and in 1999 moved to Michigan. It was in June of 2001, that he came to work at Elderly Instruments.

Kjell's strengths at Elderly are repair and restoration of acoustic instruments (guitars, mandolins and banjos). This includes set-ups, fretwork, crack repair, neck resets, finish work, and pick-up installation. Since coming to Elderly he has added work on electric guitars to his abilities, including set-ups, fretwork, electrical work and pick-up installation.

Kjell plays acoustic and electric guitar, mandolin and celtic tenor banjo. He has played in rock and roll, bluegrass, and folk bands, as well as duo's and as a solo act.
