Elderly Instruments Repair Shop

Arnold Hennig

Arnold Hennig has been building and repairing guitars for about 35 years. In 1972, while a student at Western Michigan University and with little woodworking knowledge, he set out to make a guitar, which was put together on a kitchen table with just a few tools. He soon discovered that you don't just make one guitar, and has been making and repairing them ever since. Self taught at a time when many people in the trade were self taught, Arnold learned from other people in the area, including Pat Murphy, Bill Halsey, and Richard Schneider, from the then new publication of the Guild of American Luthiers and other printed materials, and by trial and error. (In the meantime he also graduated from the University, with a degree in music and Spanish.)

In 1981 Arnold moved to New York, where he briefly worked for Juan Orozco, and then went to work for Matt Umanov Guitars in Greenwich Village as his repair staff. He joined Elderly in 1998.

At Elderly, Arnold does just about every type of repair on just about every type of instrument, as does everyone on the repair staff. By preference, he works more on acoustic instruments than electrics, and enjoys the kinds of project repairs that require a certain amount of thought. He brings to Elderly his love and respect for the many traditional and regional folkloric instruments, and, as a consequence, has also become the primary repairperson for autoharps, hammered dulcimers, and the like.
