Bela Fleck
hot platter! PERPETUAL MOTION
The term "classical banjo" (from the 1800s) usually refers to "parlor music," like waltzes and marches, played on the instrument. A few players have tackled actual classical music on the 5-string (notably John Bullard), but Bela Fleck -- a musician without boundaries if ever there was one -- has raised this unlikely pairing to the highest level (and highest visibility) yet. Fleck spent years searching for pieces that would fit the instrument, getting them transcribed into banjo tablature, and developing the appropriate technique. Then he rounded up some equally stellar and adventurous friends (like Edgar Meyer, mandolin whiz Chris Thile, and even marimba player Evelyn Glennie) to make this album. They all do a lovely job on music from Bach, Scarlatti, Chopin, Beethoven, and other composers. Fleck resists turning these pieces into bluegrassy breakdowns, playing them instead with the same respectful taste and delicacy as a classical guitarist. A double-Grammy winner!
