Though best remembered as a first-call guitarist on hundreds of Nashville recordings in the 1950s, and for the Gibson Byrdland guitar that bears (part of) his name, Hank Garland was far more than a country session picker. He was also the consummate jazzman, recording material for three tasty Columbia jazz albums in 1959 and 1960 -- "The Unforgettable Guitar of Hank Garland," "Velvet Guitar," and the classic "Jazz Winds from a New Direction" (assisted by 17-year-old up-and-coming vibraphonist Gary Burton). Here, on two CDs, is his Columbia solo output in its entirety, featuring all the tunes from the three albums plus four previously unreleased tracks from an earlier session. A treat!
