HARTEL MINSTREL BANJO, SWEENEY MODEL: Reproduction of a banjo made by Joel Walker Sweeney (popularizer of the banjo in the earliest minstrel shows) in collaboration with William Boucher for Sweeney's niece circa 1850. Curly maple neck, 12" diameter scalloped bent oak rim, ebony friction pegs and tailpiece, handmade brass brackets fit in scalloped back edge of rim. A particularly unique feature - the neck curves back to join the rim below the level of the head. Gut strings with wound 4th, best tuned 3 to 5 half-steps down from standard tuning. Made by James Hartel. NOTE: We do not have a hardshell case to fit this banjo. Usually a resonator banjo gigbag works well, or a 00-size guitar gigbag.
