Merle Travis's guitar playing is legendary. Less well known is his collaboration with Paul Bigsby in designing the Bigsby vibrato tailpiece and one of the earliest solid-body electric guitars. When he acquired a Martin D-28 in 1946 he had Bigsby make a maple neck for it like the one on his electric. Travis loved the guitar and played it until his death in 1983. This limited edition re-creation celebrates Travis's musical legacy. Only 100 will be made. The inside label is numbered in sequence with total and signed by his son Thom Bresh (a celebrated guitar player himself), C.F. Martin IV, and Fred Gretsch, current president of Bigsby Guitars. Madagascar rosewood back & sides, Adirondack spruce top with aging toner, forward-shifted and scalloped Golden Era bracing, ivoroid binding with fine herringbone top trim, 28-style rosette, unique black pickguard echoes the peghead shape. Maple low profile neck with Bigsby headstock shape, walnut overlay and Bigsby pearl logo (Martin decal is on the back), 6-in-line tuning gears, ebony fretboard (25.4" scale, 1-21/32" nut, 2" @ 12th fret, 2-1/16" string spacing at bridge), card theme pearl position inlays at 3rd, 5th, 7th, & 9th frets (heart, club, diamond, spade) "bar with 2 dots" at the 12th fret and a horizontal diamond at the 15th. Nut and saddle are bone, bridge pins are bone with tortoise dots. Martin 545 Geib style hardshell case.
