These were prominent in the early jug bands along with the washtub bass, jug, washboard and harmonica. They have persisted through the years and presently there is something of a revival going on. Blues players in particular are returning to the cigar box guitar for a truly raw delta blues sound. The instruments we offer here are made in Michigan using a variety of wooden cigar boxes. The necks, while still very rudimentary, are more "sophisticated" than a chunk of broomstick, being fretted, having position markers & actual tuning machines, and a machine screw for the nut. The bridge floats on the top. Most have 3 or 4 strings. Of particular note is that all have a built-in transducer with 1/4" jack, so you can "plug-in." While essentially the same from a functional and sound perspective, no two instruments are identical from a cosmetic perspective; they derive that personality from the particular cigar box utilized. So start your own jug band, or just have fun. We are pleased to be able to offer these instruments.

In a nutshell, it's an eleven string, fretless, acoustic/electric instrument, strung with nylon strings and tuned to standard guitar tuning. More than ever before, musicians are mixing sounds and musical styles from all over the world. This often involves the mixing of Eastern and Western music, such as using a Sitar in a western musical setting or using western instruments to imitate the sounds in eastern music. The Glissentar was inspired by a similar desire to mix elements of East and West, but in this case, in the instrument itself. The Western part of the equation is easy to recognize as a variation on the guitar. All of the instrument's basic dimensions, scale length, body size, depth, fingerboard radius, and string height, are fairly standard for acoustic/electric guitars. The Eastern influence in the Glissentar comes from the Oud, an ancestor of the Mandolin that dates back to the seventh century. The Oud is also an eleven-string fretless instrument and is still in use today primarily in Armenia and Egypt. Adapting to this new instrument is actually a great deal easier than it appears. The shape and scale of the neck and the easily visible side position markers help to give the Glissentar a very familiar feel. The Glissentar opens the door to microtonal playing as well as some incredible and unique new sounds for adventurous guitar players.

Stave back version of the FH36B. Bubinga 36-string harp, nylon strings, 5-octave range from low C (2 octaves below middle C) to a high C, Loveland sharping levers on all strings, all solid woods (solid mahogany soundboard has light-colored veneer). Stave back soundbox has angled 3-piece back; some players find this more comfortable to hold than the flat back of the FH36B. 54" tall, 38 lbs in case, (case weighs 7 lbs). Padded gigbag & wrench included.
