The original prototype Gretsch stereo guitar was created for Chet Atkins in '56 with the help of musician and electronics repairman from Cairo, Illinois, Ray Butts. Ray's ingenious split-dual-coil pickup was assembled on a prototype G6120 guitar. Only ONE was ever produced. Chet used this special, one-of-a-kind instrument on his ground breaking '57 album, "Finger-Style Guitar." Wired with two output jacks, the signal from the bass strings would run through the echo input on his amp while the treble strings were fed dry through the normal channel. Though at the time the concept of a "stereo" guitar was a brilliant idea, it was deemed impractical as the cost to produce it put it out of reach of the general buying public. A beautiful instrument designed by Roger Sadowsky with, and especially for Jim Hall. A beautiful "Jim Hall" sunburst nitro cellulose finish graces this light weight, 16" wide, 2 3/4" deep flamed maple body. The maple neck is custom shaped to Jim Hall's specification with a 1 3/4" nut width, a 24.75" scale, a bound ebony fingerboard and is joined to the body with a genuine "dovetail" joint. The tailpiece, pickguard, bridge, volume and tone knobs are all of ebony. Premium electronics designed by the Sadowsky team include their custom gold-plated JH pickup through tone and volume pots from CTS and a Switchcraft jack.
