Miller was born James A. Miller, in Virginia in 1844. He picked up the banjo early on and grew up learning the music of the slave quarters on a large Virginia plantation. In 1892, he created a traveling show, "The Old Virginia Plantation Negro," including banjo tunes, nostalgic dialect stories and a lecture, without resorting to farce or black-face. CD reissue of seven 1909 Edison cylinder records and seven 1928 QRS/Broadway disc recordings. The booklet includes photos and memorabilia with notes by African-American music scholar Doug Seroff. Book of tunes from the Elizabethan era set in tablature for the clawhammer banjo. At first glance, the songs of Shakespeares day and the mountain banjo seem to be worlds apart, but the musical traditions are, in fact, related, as Elizabethan songs are the old world cousins of mountain tunes and are a natural way to extend the mountain banjo repertoire for intermediate/advanced players. Their pedigree, their modal feel, the lilting rhythms, and the ease with which they can be adapted to the banjo argue the case. They open the possibility for new rhythms, giving the banjo a new voice. Each section is organized around a traditional mountain tuning, with a mountain song serving as a model of that tuning, illuminating the relationship between the two musical worlds. Free audio downloads available. Intermediate/advanced. 36 pp. ($14.99) ]]>

EC, well here's a very nice and interesting banjo that just puzzles us. It was sold in 2006 by another dealer as a genuine 1960's Vega banjo, although we have frankly never seen anything quite like it, so we're just not sure. Features include ~10-15/16" wood rim with ~1/4 tone hoop, 24 brackets, 19/32" rim thickness, herringbone trim on inside and outside of bottom of rim, thick mother-of-pearl rim cap with w-b trim on both sides, dual coordinator rods, old Remo plastic head, recent No Knot tailpiece. The maple neck features a natural finish, heavily carved heel in a floral pattern, white-bound ebony fretboard with pearl dot and some fancy inlays, 5 geared tuners with pearl buttons, "VEGA" inlaid in pearl in the rosewood headstock plus pearl stars in the headstock and rosewood heel cap, ~27" scale, 1-3/16" nut width, there is a brass plate on the inside of the rim that says "THE VEGA CO. EST 1889 / CUSTOM INSTRUMENT DEPT. / MODEL FW-5 EXCEL CUSTOM / NUMBER A-102641", sounds really good, with TKL HSC (SN:A-102641) ($1,750.00) ]]>

Fretboard scooped above the 17th fret for easy playing over the neck. - All natural finish, maple neck and 11" 3 -ply rim, frosted plastic head with 16 brackets, 4 guitar-type tuners, geared 5th string peg, excellent tone and playability, fine beginner's instrument. The scoop is a feature preferred by many players of old time frailing and clawhammer, not desirable for bluegrass or other styles that use the upper end of the fretboard.
