Banjo virtuoso Jens Kruger has devised a completely different approach to learning the banjo based on playing a simple melody surrounded by open drone notes. This easy but highly musical lesson will teach anyone - in minutes - to play the melodies to songs such as: "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," "Aunt Rhody," "My Grandfather's Clock," "Wildwood Flower," "Shady Grove," and other favorites in the three-finger banjo style. Back-up by the Kruger Brothers Band lets you play along with Jens for productive practice sessions. Beginners. Includes tab as PDF file on the disc. 90 min. ($26.95)

Learn how to create convincing banjo solos, both "on the fly" in jam sessions and with more precision in your practice time. Pete starts with the basic chords and rolls - showing you how to instantly play a "placeholder" solo, the easiest way to step out in a jam session. He gradually builds in "filler" content - simple moves and phrases adding variety and believability. Working with five bluegrass standards, he shows you how to hunt down a song's melody and create a full-fledged arrangement featuring the recognizable tune. Adding appealing licks, lead-ins, tags and other embellishments will give your solos polish and interest. Tab included as PDF file on the disc. Beginning/intermediate. 120 min. ($26.95)

VAMPING: BEGINNING BACKUP BANJO

What is vamping? When you vamp on the banjo, you are playing just chords, no melody. Vamping is what you do when the other person is playing the melody or playing the "lead" or "taking a break." These chords are all 4-finger chords made up the neck (in the higher positions on the banjo). When you vamp, these chords are played on the off beat. Murphy shows you how to make these chords, and goes over the chord changes to each song, one beat at a time. A MUST for the beginning banjo player! Lots of slow playing so you can play along. Ending licks taught for each song. As always, she stresses learning to hear and play these chord changes BY EAR. Taught using the "Murphy Method:" no tab or other written material, taught entirely by ear! Beginners. 120 min. ($19.95)
