Miller was born James A. Miller, in Virginia in 1844. He picked up the banjo early on and grew up learning the music of the slave quarters on a large Virginia plantation. In 1892, he created a traveling show, "The Old Virginia Plantation Negro," including banjo tunes, nostalgic dialect stories and a lecture, without resorting to farce or black-face. CD reissue of seven 1909 Edison cylinder records and seven 1928 QRS/Broadway disc recordings. The booklet includes photos and memorabilia with notes by African-American music scholar Doug Seroff.
BANJO LESSONS ON KYLE'S BACK PORCH

This is not a performance CD of the legendary Round Peak-style picker, but lessons and dialogue with pupil/friend, Tom Mylet. It was recorded using Kyle's recording machine, and no attempt was made to improve the sound quality of the recording. The session stands as testament to Kyle's style of "less is more" approach to playing. 21 tracks, including "Lost Indian", "Old 97", "Johnson Boys", "Sugar Hill", more.
