DADGAD Song Accompaniment with Sarah McQuaid

Learn more about this popular "modal" guitar tuning with the artist who wrote the book!

Monday , September 17, 2012
05:15 pm - 6:45 pm
Location: Elderly Instruments
workshop ($40)

Unlock the mysteries of the popular, modal, dulcimer-like "DADGAD" guitar tuning that lends itself so well to Celtic music, and popularised by Pierre Bensusan, Davy Graham, Bert Jansch and others - from the guitarist who wrote the perennially-popular "Irish DADGAD Guitar Book!"

This workshop is for guitarists who are experienced DADGAD players or have already attended the beginning workshop. This friendly 90-minute session will include:

- DADGAD doesn't end with D! Playing songs in Em, G and A

- It's not just for Irish Music: using DADGAD for different styles

- Tutorial: a few representative songs

Handouts with lyrics, tablature and chord diagrams for songs in various keys and styles are included in the course fee.

Note that Sarah is offering an "Introduction to DADGAD" workshop earlier the same day at 3:00, also for $40 - sign up for both for only $75!

Sarah McQuaid is a gifted and captivating performer whose warm, haunting alto is delicately cradled by her "sparkling guitar" (Sing Out!). She is both song crafter and song collector, equally at home with traditional Irish and Appalachian folk songs, Elizabethan ballads and 1930s jazz numbers.

Her musical output is a direct and unfolding reflection of her own eclectic background: Sarah was born in Spain, raised in Chicago, holds dual US and Irish citizenship, and currently lives in rural England. While the genre, era and geographical location of her songs may change, at their core is a musician who has soaked it all in – and, luckily for us, is able to eloquently express the stories she's gathered.

"I really enjoyed your workshop and I liked the way you made sure there was something for everyone. Each one of us had come along with widely different expectations and experience but you overcame this by adapting to the way the flow was going... I'm sure I speak for other participants when I give a big thank you for an excellent workshop, which I would recommend to any guitarist."
