Traditional Irish music for fingerstyle guitar
This seminar will cover fingerstyle guitar arrangements of traditional Irish music that range from intermediate to fairly advanced, depending on students’ abilities. Use of alternate tunings will be discussed, but the focus will be on standard and drop-D. The tunes will help students with various right and left hand techniques, but are also just great tunes!
About Duck Baker
Duck Baker is among the most highly regarded fingerstyle guitarists of his generation and his repertoire spans the entire history of jazz from ragtime through swing, to modern masters like Thelonious Monk and Herbie Nichols, to free improvisation.
Baker also has been a seminal figure in bringing Irish traditional music to the guitar, especially the compositions of Turlough O'Carolan, born 1670. Carolan’s music is often seen as a link between traditional Irish melodies and baroque music, but more importantly, it includes some of the most striking melodies ever composed.
Baker is one of those rare musicians who doesn't draw upon the repertoire of his chosen instrument for musical raw material, but rather finds ideas in the broader musical stream, and shapes them to the sensibilities of the guitar. His stylistic approach eschews any cosmetic prettiness of tone, and focuses rather upon the possibilities of stark, open harmonies and complex interwoven bass lines.
