Steve's successful Bottleneck Blues Guitar Workshop is designed for experienced beginners and intermediate-level players who know basic chord shapes and want to improve their technique. The class covers effective use of open tunings and learning to incorporate the fluid sound of the bottleneck slide along with fretted notes and chords. Students can expect to add a tune a day to their songlist while polishing essential elements of slide guitar performance such as intonation, tone, and vibrato, according to Steve. Bring your guitar, accessories (including a slide), paper, pencil, and, if you wish, a recording device. Tablature and handouts will be provided.
For those who may be interested, Steve has released a DVD titled BLUES/ROOTS GUITAR - FINGERPICKING AND SLIDE FROM THE DELTA TO NEW ORLEANS. According to Dan McIntee, who purchases these DVDs for Elderly, the recording offers instruction on an alternating bass arrangement, country blues licks, a classic jazz/blues piece "that uses some funky New Orleans-style chords," open G bottleneck, and the showstopper "Hot Time In The Old Town Tonight." McIntee refers to Steve James as "a favorite on the contemporary acoustic blues circuit."
"...James knows roots musicians like rotisserie baseball players know minor league prospects.... With an unconditional devotion to the roots of today's popular music, James is one of the real deals in American music." - Dan Willging, Dirty Linen
