A "Playing by Ear & Jamming" Banjo Workshop by ROSS NICKERSON
"...I would be the first to sign up for another [Nickerson] workshop be it Lansing, Detroit, or...." - a satisfied banjo student

Location: Elderly Instruments
workshop

Because Ross Nickerson's banjo workshop at Elderly last fall very nearly sold out, we're taking to heart the above words of a happy Detroit-area banjo student quoted on Ross's website. The student wrote, "I think it is a real tribute to Ross that so many of his students travelled [sic] in excess of 100 miles (each way) to attend the workshop and no one left complaining. In fact, one person travelled 400 miles to be a part of that workshop." A word to the wise: Space is limited, so sign up soon.
Since offering last year's Bluegrass Banjo Workshop, Ross has launched a new workshop which focuses on playing by ear; jamming with others; learning more about using chords; basic improvising; and getting away from tablature. Other topics that will be covered during the four-hour hands-on session include exercises and drills; picking; timing; memorizing; improvising; jamming skills; and backup.
This workshop will be ideal for intermediate-level students who want to raise their skill level and get more direction. Beginners are welcome to come and take notes, and they'll leave "inspired with a much clearer understanding of what needs to be done," says Ross. The course will also benefit advanced players: Ross will find ways to challenge them and "make sure they come away with some new understanding, licks and tips."
Pinecastle Recording Artist, Telluride Bluegrass Champ, author of The Banjo Encyclopedia: Bluegrass Banjo From A to Z, and banjoteacher.com host, Ross Nickerson specializes in breaking down the common obstacles unique to learning 5-string bluegrass banjo into simple practical terms. Check www.banjoteacher.com for some (a plethora!) of the most positive and encouraging student testimonials we've seen, many of them attributed, like this from Ross' student Joe Bonsall of The Oak Ridge Boys:
"The main thing I learned is that I have so much more to learn!! It was a great time really....Ross Nickerson is incredible!"
Who better to tout the teacher's talents than his students? Here are further accolades:
"I took your instruction and immediately applied it to my practicing and those little roadblocks that I was experiencing disappeared."
"The atmosphere was very good for learning. It was very informal and yet very well organized and effective. There was a variety of skill levels in the class, but I think everyone's needs were addressed."
"This man is not only a fantastic banjoist, but a class act teacher!!....I got my moneys worth--in spades!"
"It's amazing how with so many people in a room, that he can give personal attention to everyone, no matter what level you are at. He gives encouragement along with a master dose of how to improve your playing."
