Location: Elderly Instruments
in-store performance
(free)
Lare Williams & New Direction are offering yet another free in-store concert--their fourth performance at Elderly in as many years--and each concert is even better than the last! They grace Elderly's stage annually with hot picking, smooth harmonies, unique twists on traditional music, and that ever-haunting "high lonesome sound" of authentic bluegrass.
With Lare Williams on bass and vocals, Tony Zapolnik on guitar and vocals, Patty Williams on mandolin and vocals, Erik Waynesmith on Dobro, and invariably a fine special-guest fiddler or banjo picker, this traditional western-Michigan band entertains all ages, so feel free to bring the kids; even tiny tots love this lively music.
Lare Williams & New Direction have appeared at The Ark, The Creole Gallery, Ohio's Bluegrass Junction, the Marshall Bluegrass Festival, Byron Goes Bluegrass, IBMA World of Bluegrass showcases, Kentucky's Poppy Mountain Bluegrass Festival, the Tri-States Bluegrass Festival, the Grand Rapids Folk Arts Society, and more. This season they're off to the Indy Folk Series in Indianapolis and the Leslie Bluegrass Festival, along with other popular venues.
The band spent six months on the Bluegrass Radio Charts in Indianapolis, with one month in the #1 position. LWND has
had two songs released as World Wide "Singles" in the bluegrass circuit, and Lare's original piece Old Guitar hit #1 on
the "Fields of Bluegrass" radio program in Indianapolis. Old Guitar also made the semi-final round of the Dallas Songwriters Association National Competition, placing it in the "top 10 in the nation" in 2003.
LWND have three CDs to their credit--all carried at Elderly--and praise for their recorded works abounds:
"Mixing bluegrass standards such as Ralph Stanley's Angel Band with originals, such as the touching title track, Williams has released a quality project worthy of national attention." - Grand Rapids Press
"Lare Williams is a highly adept musician...and has a distinctive vocal style that imparts a unique perspective to the music....Grandpa John is an impressive endeavor and hopefully will be the first of many such projects from a young artist with unlimited potential." - Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine
"Once in a great while an unfamiliar musician will come along that your instincts tell you has that 'certain something' shared only with the very best. Lare Williams (and New Direction) is that kind of talent." - DJ Cary Allen Fields, WICR's Fields of Bluegrass, Indianapolis.
"...one of the finest bluegrass projects of the year...a band that is clicking on all eight cylinders." - Bluegrass Breakdown
