Laurence Juber--"L.J."--is back by popular demand for yet another fingerstyle guitar workshop, a year after his last visit to Elderly. Since he was last here to teach his long-successful two-hour hands-on workshop titled "Up Close with LJ," he has won another coveted Grammy Award (Best Pop Instrumental Album), this time for his contribution to the popular compilation Henry Mancini: Pink Guitar.

This workshop offers a "relatively effortless" way (to borrow LJ's characterization of the event) to learn how to play in his musical style; LJ will demonstrate his approach to composing and arranging music for fingerstyle guitar, with particular emphasis on altered tunings. This entertaining and educational workshop is intended for players of all levels: there's plenty to be gained by everyone in attendance. Bring your guitar--and bottled water to drink, if you choose. LJ is more than former Wings lead guitarist and a master of fingerstyle guitar. Clinician, composer, director, studio artist, performing soloist, songwriter, producer, and teacher- extraordinaire, LJ is one of the most accomplished and sought-after guitarists in the world today.

It'd be fun to recite a few of LJ's musical accomplishments in the last dozen years, if for no reason other than to illustrate some of his many and varied talents--among them his teaching abilities. There isn't room, so we've selected a sampling of the many entries for 1999: "Laurence can currently be heard playing guitar on Disney's newest cartoons, 'Mouse Works' and 'Pepper Ann'." "Laurence has a new instructional video released by Homespun Tapes...." "Laurence's guitar work will be featured in the new Chevy Chase movie, 'Snow Day'." "Laurence has been appointed as an instructor for the 'Accent on Music' guitar seminar." The list is long.

As of October, 2004, LJ officially has a column in Guitar World--Acoustic Magazine, with an article about his arrangement of "Strawberry Fields Forever." In November, 2004, he was featured in that magazine, with Paul McCartney on the cover and LJ's article about acoustic guitars played during his time with Wings.

The October 2004 issues of both Guitar Player and Acoustic Guitar World Magazines offered masterclass-style features on LJ. And be sure to check out the May 2005 issue of Guitar Player Magazine for a review of the Grammy-winning Henry Mancini: Pink Guitar CD, featuring LJ.

In addition to LJ's workshop on Thursday evening, you can also enjoy him in concert at the Creole Gallery, 1218 North Turner Street, on Friday, October 7, at 8 p.m. Tickets for the concert will be available at Elderly in mid-September.
