A FREE In-Store Concert with Metro-Detroit Mainstay JAN KRIST

"...baptized in the Beatles, Motown, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Paul Simon, Carole King...."

Saturday , May 07, 2005
11:00 am
Location: Elderly Instruments
in-store performance (free)

It's been over five years since Jan Krist has graced Elderly's showroom "stage" with an in-store concert: she last shared her Beatle-esque pop-folk-rock with us in December, 1999. We're happy to have her back--and to carry her recently-released self-produced album When Planets Collide.

Krist won praise at the nationally-renown Kerrville Songwriting Competition in Texas in 1991 and was honored as Best Vocalist in the Acoustic Division at the Detroit Music Awards in l995. She's a regular guest on Matt Watroba's popular WEMU radio show "Folks Like Us" and can be seen in concert throughout southeastern Michigan: at Ann Arbor's Ark and Greenwood Coffeehouse, Canton's new Village Theater, Trinity House Theatre, Memphis Smoke, the Flint Folklore Society, Calvin College's "Festival of Faith and Music," the Greater Flint Arts Council, The Box Factory for the Performing Arts, at "Music Under the Pines" hosted by Haslett's Ben Hassenger of Mystic Shake fame....

Krist's 1992 debut album, Decapitated Society, was praised by Billboard Magazine as "an incredibly powerful debut...unreservedly recommended." Billboard similarly touted her second recording, Wing and a Prayer: "Krist's multifaceted voice is a marvel: soaring, cajoling, pleading---sometimes in the same measure. Virtually every song is a gem. Highest marks!" 1996's Curious was voted one of the Top 100 albums of all time by CCM Magazine.

A recent Detroit Free Press article (February 11, 2005) says it well: "Bloomfield Township singer-songwriter Jan Krist has been a mainstay of the folk scene in metro Detroit for 25 years, but her career took a turn last year when a chance meeting with David Tamulevich, an agent, performer and seminal figure in folk music, led to a part-time position.... Krist, 50, works with Tamulevich at the agency, writes and performs her own music, conducts educational programs and is a wife and mother of three grown kids.... Now, with her clear, pure voice and Gibson Gospel guitar, Krist performs her own material, which might sound like folk, rock, pop or country from one song to the next. The subject matter is universal, the chord progressions are sophisticated, and the harmonies are infectious."

Join us for what promises to be an enjoyable--and free!--concert at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 7.
