A "Performance Technique" Workshop by Veteran Performer CARLA SCIAKY

Not yet comfortable performing? Nervous about connecting with your audience? Come work with Carla!

Saturday , April 02, 2005
10:30 am - 12:30 pm
Location: Elderly Instruments
workshop ($35.00)

Whether you are just considering taking that first step toward the microphone or want to "fine tune" your performance technique, you can benefit from this two-hour workshop, titled "Performance Technique--Beginning and Beyond." Veteran traditional-music artist, singer-songwriter, and teacher Carla Sciaky (pronounced 'See-AH-kee') has performed nationwide for nearly a quarter of a century, and her workshop offers opportunities to increase the on-stage comfort levels of both novice performers and musicians with some performing experience.

With Carla you'll consider and discuss practical suggestions for pre-stage preparation and presenting professional-yet-personable performances. Carla will offer tips on handling between-songs patter, dealing with on-stage mistakes and other mishaps and pitfalls, creating a set list, relating to your audience, quelling your apprehension, developing your own style, honing your talents... Every effort will be made to focus on each individual attendee's specific concerns relating to performance.

Bring bottled water and, if you like, an instrument. IF time permits, there may be an opportunity to "take the stage" for a short period in order to try out some of the performance tips and techniques imparted during the workshop.

Sciaky is a nationally-known performer and recording artist with half a dozen recording under her belt. Her music combines soft-spoken sensitivity with a unique gift for romantic balladry.
In addition to performing nationwide as a soloist, she also played in the Front Range region of Colorado as a member of The Mother Folkers, an eclectic women's band consisting of Sciaky, Mollie O'Brien, Bonnie Phipps, and others--an ensemble that has, according to Craig Harris in All Music Guide, "the most carefully pronounced name in folk music."

Carla Sciaky has been an Artist in Residence in both the Utah and Colorado Arts Council Artists in Education programs; currently she is on the rosters of Young Audiences and Colorado Artists Showcase. In 1996 she took a break to "be a mom and have a mid-life crisis," to borrow her words, and now she's back on the music scene as a teacher of violin, guitar, and recorder, student of classical piano, director of two medieval/Renaissance ensembles, and traditional folk artist in various venues around the country.

She's performing in concert at The Ten Pound Fiddle Coffeehouse on Friday evening, April 1, at 8 pm. For further information on the concert, visit www.tenpoundfiddle.org.

"Carla Sciaky is an excellent singer/songwriter and musician who serves well as an ambassador of the folk and acoustic music world....[her] music stands out for its ability to communicate both lyrically and musically." - Judd Grossman, in a review of Sciaky's CD Awakening for the Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange.
