Sara Q

Musician and storyteller Sara Q found her voice early. Having sisters 10 and 13 years older, she was constantly surrounded by the energy of live music. Performances erupted in her parents' living room with the neighborhood teenagers jammingÂ’ to popular hits of the 70's with their own instruments. As a toddler, Sara played the spoons.

Sara started playing guitar at 7, and played throughout high school. Her first band was "The Dead House Plants."

She put aside music during the college years to focus on her degree in fine arts, but quickly dusted off her old guitar when she saw an ad in a coffee shop for an all-female band. That band, Virginia Dare, was short-lived, but allowed Sara to meet and become friends with Sarah Klamer. Klamer encouraged her to join "Chasing Our Tale," with her. A folky-funky-bluesy-jazzy outfit focused on groove. When Chasing Our Tale lost their lead singer, Sara was encouraged by lead guitarist Russ Olmsted to step up to the mic. When Tale broke up, Sara continued to step up, but as a solo artist.

"I would never be here today without the friends I made in Tale," Sara said. The guitar Sara relies on as a solo artist was made by Olmsted, now a luthier.

Chasing Our Tale also gave Sara the opportunity to meet and later marry her husband, Sean Quashnie - from whom she gets the "Q" in Sara Q. "Sean has given me so much in life. He is always supportive and encouraging," Sara said. Sean is also a musician, focusing on Cajun-style accordion.

As a solo artist, Sara has performed a variety of intimate venues. She continues to especially enjoy fundraising events. "Music should be shared" she says.

Her debut CD, Songs To Make Your Other Dog Jealous. is a collection of her ironic, witty, passionate storytelling. It was nominated for WYCE's annual Jammie award for Best Local Folk CD 2001.
