Garnet Rogers

Canadian folk icon

Monday , July 12, 1999
12:00 am
Location: Elderly Instruments
in-store performance (free)

Canadian singer-songwriter Garnet Rogers will play a free, in-store performance at Elderly Instruments (1100 N. Washington, Lansing) at 5:30 p.m. Monday, July 11. Rogers is touring in support of his brand-new release "Sparrow’s Wing." Rogers is well known as the longtime sideman of his brother, folk legend Stan Rogers. Since Stan's death, Garnet has become a major folk figure in his own right. The Boston Globe calls him a "charismatic performer and singer." Rogers is a man with a powerful physical presence, close to six-and-a-half feet tall, with a voice to match. With his smooth dark baritone, incredible range and thoughtful, dramatic phrasing, Rogers is considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music is literate, passionate and highly sensitive. An optimist at heart, Rogers sings songs about people who are not obvious heroes, and the small victories of the everyday. His over the top humor and lightning-quick wit moves his audiences from tears to laughter and back again. Rogers has been featured on numerous television and radio programs, including Much Music, The Country Beat, Listen Up, Gabereau, Morningside, Mountain Stage and All Things Considered.
