Nevertheless, this elusive figure was one of pre-WWII's most popular bluesmen, issuing over 70 sides and defining the "Piedmont" style of blues guitar-playing: pianistic, harmonically sophisticated, more ragtime than the blues of the Delta. Blake's bewildering, nearly inimitable picking skills influenced a whole array of celebrated peers, among them Brownie McGhee, Josh White, Blind Boy Fuller and Rev. Gary Davis---not to mention an uncounted army of disciples from the `60s through the present day.
