The late John Duffey (who passed away in 1996) was a fixture in bluegrass for decades; first with the Country Gentlemen and then anchoring the band for which he's best remembered---the Seldom Scene, Washington D.C.'s long-lived bluegrass institution. A noted mandolinist, a tireless entertainer and an utterly nonpareil singer, Duffey brought enough of a city-boy sensibility to the Scene to introduce plenty of songs from other genres into their bluegrass repertoire, attracting ever-wider audiences and establishing the band's progressive reputation. Here's a delectable sampling from his Sugar Hill recordings with the Seldom Scene, more than 20 year's worth of choice cuts and a great introduction to this latter-day bluegrass star.
