The Rev. Gary Davis, gospel singer, church pastor, and unique genius of the guitar who guided countless proteges through two generations, has been well-documented on recordings. But this rich package, labelled the "Ultimate Collection," consists of treasures from the private stash of producer Stefan Grossman, largely unreleased stuff that's as strong as anything else in Davis' recorded ouvre---and there's a lot of it! Recordings made at Columbia University 1958-59, at his home in the Bronx from 1964-66, and concert tracks 1962-66, 58 cuts in all. Includes a 36-page booklet with photos and detailed notes by blues scholar Bruce Bastin.
