NEIGHBOR GIRL: We were big fans of Cary Fridley when she sang and played guitar with the Freight Hoppers (one of our all-time favorite stringbands), so we're delighted to carry her first solo CD. Cary is still solidly immersed in southern music, and her performances of these old country songs and traditional ballads fit right into the same tradition as the singers she learned from (the Carter Family, Flatt and Scruggs, and the Coon Creek Girls among them). Although Cary is joined by fiddler Art Stamper, Larry Perkins, and members of her own band, this project is more low-key than the uptempo numbers that the Freight Hoppers favored; it sounds a lot like the songs you might hear around someone's kitchen table or front porch. Don't miss hearing this great young singer who is forging her own links in the chain of Appalachian music.
