Few guitarists combined the primitive with the sophisticated the way the inimitable Spence did - his playing was intense and wildly syncopated, and his flights of improvisation (sometimes juggling three musical lines at once) were a wonder of inexhaustible creativity. These cuts, made at the time of his "discovery" in 1958 are (we think) his very best.
