MOUNTAIN SOUL: Given the success of "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and Dolly Parton's recent bluegrass albums, it would be easy to assume that Patty Loveless is just trying to jump on the same bandwagon. But, in fact, Patty grew up in a small Kentucky town and has sung mountain music all her life, so her new CD is truly a return to her own roots. Patty sings some gospel ("Daniel Prayed," "Two Coats"), some bluegrass ("I Know You're Married But I Love You Still," "The Boys Are Back in Town"), and some heartfelt originals by Patty and her guitarist/songwriter husband, Emory Gordy, Jr. Most moving is Darrell Scott's "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive," which describes the hard life of a coal miner much like Patty's own father. The guest musicians include Stuart Duncan, Ricky Skaggs, Earl Scruggs, Tater Tate, and (on two vocal duets) Travis Tritt.
