hot platter! DOWN HOME: The Roan Mtn. Hilltoppers literally came "down from the mountain" in the late '70s and early '80s -- real mountain folk who had been playing stringband tunes for decades. They definitely looked (and sounded) the part: a septuagenarian banjo player, a cross-eyed fiddler in bib overalls, an autoharp player in a homemade dress, a guitarist playing left-handed, upside down, and over the top of the fingerboard, and a washtub bass player with an overdrive like a diesel rig. Favorites at festivals and fiddle contests around the South and East, they also became darlings of old-timey revivalists AND the post-punk rock scene(!) with a group of fans that appreciated their "untrained" virtuosity, unadorned appearance, and infectious rhythmic drive. These tracks are the real deal!
