GIBSON CUSTOM 12" CONVERSION BANJO (c.1936)
20 Photos
VG-EC, this is a very rare bird indeed! A 1930's 12" rim from Gibson is virtually unheard of, and this instrument was undoubtedly some kind of custom order or experimental model. It features a 12" wood rim (29/32" thickness) with a 2-piece archtop tone ring (with 33 holes of 2 different sizes), tube and 4-piece flat plate flange, gold hardware, 26 brackets, with a First Quality 5-string neck (sunburst curly maple with ivoroid-bound rosewood fretboard, Flying Eagle inlays on neck and peghead, 2-band "GROVER PAT." tuners with mother-of-pearl tuners -- one modern repro tuner -- and modern geared 5th peg). Also includes the original plectrum 4-string dark-finished maple neck with 22-fret ebony fingerboard and yellowed pearloid block inlays at frets 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 15, 17, 19 and 22, double cut headstock with Flying Eagle style inlays, sunburst flamed maple resonator with 15" outer diameter and flat back (has been repaired on side), modern replacement Presto tailpiece engraved "Granada." On consignment, with guitar SSC - price reduced (SN:517-1)

GIBSON STYLE 75 FLATHEAD CONVERSION (late 1930's -- early 1940's)
16 Photos
VG-EC, original flathead tone ring, one-piece flange (in very nice shape, virtually no warpage at all), no label, 19/32" rim, 11" plastic head, original Presto tailpiece (with a center hole punched to accommodate 5 strings), double white-bound mahogany resonator with w-b-w concentric purfling rings, mahogany neck by (we are told) Frank Neat, white-bound rosewood fretboard with flying eagle inlay pattern, pearl Mastertone block inlay at 21st fret, railroad spikes at frets 7 and 9, double cut peghead, tuners appear to be Waverly double ring geared tuners with ivoroid buttons, nickel plated hardware. Includes an appraisal from Steve Huber which among other things states that it "is not uncommon to see a late flathead without a serial number chalked in the resonator or without a Mastertone warranty decal on the rim." We agree with this as well as the rim and all the hardware on the rim (including the flathead tone ring) is original, and that normally the serial number would appear on the back of the headstock (and the neck is not included or available). On consignment, with modern Gibson HSC (black interior). Important to note is that this banjo has a fantastic sound - it is loud and clear, a real herringbone killer! Easily one of the best we have heard.
