AFRICAN GOURD AKONTING: EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO GET, AS SHIPPING FROM AFRICA IS PROHIBITIVELY EXPENSIVE - The akonting is the traditional folk lute of the Jola, a West African people found in Senegal, Gambia, and Guinea-Bissua. It's a banjo-like instrument with a skin-headed gourd body, two long melody strings and one short drone string, akin to the short 5th "thumb string" on the 5-string banjo. Played in a poly-rhythmic clawhammer style, there is a growing body of evidence that the akonting is an important fore-runner of the American 5-string banjo.
