Merle Travis's guitar playing is legendary. Less well known is his collaboration with Paul Bigsby in designing the Bigsby vibrato tailpiece and one of the earliest solid-body electric guitars. When he acquired a Martin D-28 in 1946 he had Bigsby make a maple neck for it like the one on his electric. Travis loved the guitar and played it until his death in 1983. This limited edition re-creation celebrates Travis's musical legacy. Only 100 will be made. This deluxe version of the Ditson 111 was designed for the Ditson Company, but never produced. Like the 111 it is a 12-fret dreadnought built with fine mahogany and an Adirondack spruce top. Deluxe features include unique fretboard inlays, and ivoroid binding around body and fretboard. The soundhole is also bound in ivoroid. The top is stained dark to match the body woods. Other features include scalloped Golden Era style braces, ebony pyramid bridge, no pickguard. Modified V-shape neck, ebony fretboard (1-7/8" nut, 25.4" scale),slotted headstock with Brazilian rosewood veneer (no decal, inlay, or stamp), Waverly/Sloane 3-on-plate gears with ivoroid buttons. Fossil ivory nut & saddle, gloss finish including neck. Inside label signed by C.F.Martin IV. 540V case has vintage style latches.
