RENAISSANCE SOLOS FOR MANDOLIN by John Holenko Photo
Most of this music is from editions or manuscripts from England in the late 1500s, with a few French pieces. There were two main kinds of instruments being played during the 16th & 17th centuries: the 4 course (four sets of doubled strings), and the 6 course cittern. These pieces were all written for the 4 course instrument and fall into three main categories: dance music, song arrangements and free pieces, which are basically preludes that explore the melodic range of the instrument. The dance pieces are not really meant to be danced to, taking their form and rhythm from popular court dances. These can be played with a wide range of overall tempo, but once a tempo is chosen, should be strictly adhered to. The song arrangements are settings of popular songs, and more formal vocal settings. Since the range of the cittern and mandolin are the same, Holenko has kept the melodies intact. Because of the difference in tuning however, the voicing of the harmonies have been changed so as to fit on the mandolin. Beginning/intermediate. Note/tab. 64 pp.

RHAPSODY FOR MANDOLIN & PIANO by Victor Kioulaphides Photo
The Rhapsody adheres to the original Greek meaning of its title: an array of songs sewn together. It also adheres to the later sense of the term: a work that is high-spirited, exuberant, and extravagantly emotional. Composed as a series of episodes, some songlike, some dance-like, building progressively and featuring the musical and technical capabilities of the mandolin. Includes a separate pull-out mandolin part. Advanced. Notation only. 15 & 7 pp.
